Breaking Generational Curses

A generational curse is basically a defilement that was passed down from one generation to another. This term “generational curses” comes from the concept of the “law of generations”, which was revealed to Moses by God. In this case, the effects of sin committed by a father or anyone that brings a curse tend to run in families, even to the third and fourth generation.

“The LORD then passed in front of him and called out, “I, the LORD, am a God who is full of compassion and pity, who is not easily angered and who shows great love and faithfulness. I keep my promise for thousands of generations and forgive evil and sin; but I will not fail to punish children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for the sins of their parents.” – (Exodus 34:6-7 GNB).

What many believers do not know is that freedom from generational curses was even prophesied in the Old Covenant, and this was accomplished through the finished work of Christ on the cross.

“When those days come, people will no longer say, ‘Fathers have eaten sour grapes, and their children’s teeth are set on edge.’ But each person will die for his own sin. Whoever eats sour grapes will have his own teeth set on edge. – The New Promise is: “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new promise to Israel and Judah. It will not be like the promise that I made to their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of Egypt. They rejected that promise, although I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD” – (Jeremiah 31:29-32 GW).

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” – (Galatians 3:13-14).

If we want curses to be broken off this generation, then we must get back to the spiritual father and son relationship that God has ordained through scripture for the Body. This relationship carries the authority to nullify curses, even to many generations. It takes one with a higher authority spiritually to impose or break a curse.

“Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch” – (Genesis 49:3-4).

Reuben was cursed and stripped of his birth-right as the firstborn, because he mounted on his father’s couch, by sleeping with Bilhah, Jacob’s concubine. Jacob was so angry that on his deathbed be pronounced a curse which became a generational curse that rested upon the seed of Reuben.

The curse placed upon Reuben brought him to a place where he became an orphan in his heart, and resulted to him being stripped of his birth-right as the firstborn.

He was cursed to be unstable as water and not to excel. This is the fruit of a vagabond spirit that rules the heart of orphans and makes them wander from place to place. We must deal with the orphan spirit within the Body, because an orphan spirit creates inability to reproduce and impact the next generation.

It took Moses who was raised up by God as a prophet and a father to the children of Israel, which includes the tribe of Reuben, to break this generational curse that was now upon the seed of Reuben.

Moses in this situation spoke to the children of Israel before his death, because it was the custom to release the inheritance. He gathered the tribe of Israel, but obviously something was wrong with the tribe of Reuben, for they were diminished off from the face of the earth because over 400 years down the line a curse was placed upon them by Jacob their father.

It took a man, Moses, standing in a higher authority spiritually as a father to break the curse. Before he died he did this with the blessing – “Let Reuben live, and not die; and let not his men be few” – (Deuteronomy 33:6). This reveals the grace that is bestowed upon a spiritual father to break generational curses operating upon sons because of an orphan heart and spirit.
